CASA BATLLO By Antoni GAUDI
Do you say ‘More Gaudi’? Yes! If you are in Barcelona, always Gaudi! We need to understand this crazy architect well 🙂
We come to Casa Batllo from Casa Mila. (Be careful its pronunciation, I said Batlo and they didn’t understand. The correct one is Batio . I cannot speak Catalan language 🙂 ) Both are on Passeig de Gràcia Avenue and very close to each other. Casa Batllo is one of Gaudi’s most beautiful buildings.
Casa Batllo means Batllo Family’s House. This house is very unusual as Casa Mila.. Some parts of its facade seem like bone. So the other popular name of the house is House of Bones (Casa Dels Ossos). She was commissioned by Mr.Joseph Batllo who was one of Barcelona’s rich and the most respected textile indistrualists.. Actually, Mr. Joseph bought this house from her first owner. She was very usual and ordinary. He made Gaudi to revise the house again..
When you face with the house you deeply get surprised. She seems to be coming out from a 3D fairytale book.. 🙂 She has really exaggeration which may only be in the extraordinary tales.. Very beautiful and unique..
Gaudi was inspired by human skeleton while designing Casa Batllo. You can watch the video on the terrace floor explaining you how a dream turnes real.
Let’s go inside..
Casa Batllo Interior
You go in with an ingenious audio guide. How can a guide be effective like this? The smart guide has a display and wherever you encroach the device, display shows you the past view of that part. You see as you live at that time, fully decorated as the past.. This is great.
Casa Batllo Interior design is fabulous… You see Gaudi’s lines in every point..
Blue is dominant color in Casa Batllo.. There is almost no corner. All lines are rounded. Gaudi style 🙂
We are passing from a floor to another one.. I am so excited for the terrace..
Casa Batllo White Corridor
We are so close to terrace.. We are on the white arhway corridor..
I loved floor tiles..
and here is the white steps which will be used to go to terrace..
Casa Batllo Terrace
and here we are on the terrace..
Chimneys are surreal just like ones in Casa Mila..
The chimneys were decorated with broken ceramic pieces. Classic Gaudi style 🙂 This broken ceramic pieces and mosaic decorated are very common in Catalan Modernism. So you will see them at almost all Gaudi’s work.. According to some sources the ceramics were broken while their transfer, but Gaudí didn’t want to waste them so used them. Really funny.. As I said before, I respect this man.. Just like others who dare to live as how they want..

BLOCK OF DISCORD
Casa Batllo is next to two extraordinary buildings, looking like her.. These are the most famous modernist architecture examples and named as Manzana de la Discordia (Block of Discord). They are as if in competititon with their different and unusual look. The other two houses; Casa Amatller and Casa Lleo Morera. Casa Batllo is the most famous one. So you shouldn’t miss your attention to the other two houses. Casa Amatller is already just next to Casa Batllo. Three of them are at Passeig de Gracia..
This is the second house of Block of Discord. Casa Amatller is not famous as much as Casa Batllo but I think it’s very unusual and beautiful too and must be seen. This is a Joseph Puig’s work who was a Catalan modernist architect.
I cannot decide how to describe this house; Cute? Sweet? Or gothic? But Casa Amatller is a certainly beautiful building. She is also as if flowing from a fairytale book. She has exquisite lines. Examine the motives carefully.
Casa Lleo Morera
The third one of Block Of Discord. This house has been awarded by Barcelona City Council. She was made by Lluis Domenech who was Catalan modernist architect.
We visited Casa Batllo and the other two houses.. We have enough of Gaudi? Of course no! I want to see everything related to Gaudi. So what’s next? The cathedral that gives Barcelona its meanings. Gaudi’s number one.. his big passion.. his magnum opus.. sacred cathedral which Gaudi devoted his life and spent his last 14 years for.. Crazy magnificent church LA SAGRADA FAMILIA…
